Some days call for patience. Today called for patience and a chair.
Today my husband is in surgery at Mayo Clinic, and I have hours ahead of me in the waiting room with nothing to do but sit, worry, and refill my coffee. So instead of just sitting, I followed along with one of the Stronger Seniors videos right there in my seat.
No one around me so much as blinked — rows of people scrolling their phones, and me quietly working through the moves next to them. I had ear buds in, but I could just watch and follow too. No one noticed at all... except one woman sitting across from me, who said she thought everyone in that room ought to be doing it too. She wasn't wrong. A room full of anxious people sitting still for hours is exactly the kind of place that could use a little movement.
It turns out those few minutes did more for me than I expected. My energy came back up when it had started to sag. My posture straightened out after slumping in an uncomfortable chair for so long. And the anxious edge I'd been carrying since we walked in early this morning genuinely softened, just from moving and focusing on my body and breath.
Surgery days are long, and there's not much you can control while you wait. But it turns out you can always control whether you keep moving — even from a waiting room chair.
Sending strength to everyone else in the waiting room.
